St. Stephens

St. Stephen's assists individuals and families in obtaining their out-of-state U.S. birth certificates.

If you meet the following criteria, you can walk-in to St. Stephen's Human Services (2309 Nicollet Ave) Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm for assistance applying for a birth certificate:

  • You are applying for an out-of-state (not MN) U.S. birth certificate,
  • You have state ID, and
  • You do not need help paying the fees.

If you are applying for a MN certificate, need help paying the fees, or do not have state ID, keep reading.

Where can St. Stephen’s get a birth certificate from?

United States Only. If you need international resources, contact Mike at 612-870-2283 for referrals. If you need a Minnesota birth certificate, it is best to go to a Hennepin County Service Center to obtain with your MN ID. They print it right on the spot!

How long does it take to get my birth certificate?

It depends on the state. Contact Mike for more information.

What if I don’t have my state ID?

If you do not have your MN ID and it has been less than 5 years, you could get this renewed at a Hennepin County Service Center. If that is not the case, you can go to a Hennepin County Service Center with someone who does have an ID who has known you 2 years. If you do not have a state ID from a different state, call Mike at 612-874-0311 to discuss your options.

How do I pay for my MN or out of state birth certificate and/or MN ID card?

Birth certificate fees can range from $5-50 depending on the state. Some local resources that can assist:
